Manos Milagrosas is a charitable organization that’s been lending a helping hand to orphaned children in Puerto Rico for more than half of a century. It was founded by Dr. Nemesio Rodriguez Labrado and his wife, Inés Antillón de Rodríguez, who started the organization on April 14th, 1963. In the years since Manos Milagrosas has grown from a small one-room facility into a school with multiple buildings and playgrounds all across Puerto Rico. In 2007, the organization started to offer a Teen Parenting course which helps teenagers develop a range of skills needed to be a good parent. Manos Milagrosas also provides education for children orphans by providing them with a free school uniform, a school bag and 24/7 educational support. Manos Milagrosas’ mission is to provide their services regardless of class, race, religion or gender. Programs vary slightly depending on location but the following are commonly offered:The original building was inaugurated in 1963 by famous Puerto Rican singer-songwriter Luis Vargas who was the president of the organization during its first years. The building is now open to 860 students each year. In 1987, a new building was inaugurated in the rion known as Las Marías. It served as a central school for all of Manos Milagrosas programs until it burned down in 2005 due to a power outage caused by Hurrican Rita. In 2006, the old building was reconstructed and is open to 1,400 students each year. The new building serves as the main school for the organization and is currently its biggest one. It was inaugurated November 14th, 2006. The building provides services for more than 1,400 students each year and is located in Aguada on PR-139 highway. The newest building of the organization that was inaugurated on September 14th, 2010. The building serves 300 students each year. It is located in Las Piedras on PR-139 highway. After the passing of Inés Rodríguez in 1995, her husband Nemesio decided to build a memorial to his late wife and acquired a former women’s jail in 2003, which he converted into a museum that was inaugurated June 23th, 2003. The museum displays various artifacts from Inés Rodríguez’ life, including her own poetry books and paintings, along with other personal belongings such as her high school diploma and wedding ring. The museum is open daily from 10:30am to 4:30pm and cost $5 for adults and $2.50 for students. - 4th grade costs $200, costs $40 per family member. Children six months through kindergarten are eligible for the programs, the four-year program costs approximately $2,600. Nurses visit weekly to administer tests and give them medication.
