Google maps has been and remains a great tool for many people, but it falls down in some situations: namely, you cannot do street view or satellite view on buildings that are often taller than the average. For those times, people have needed to rely on maps from institutions such as the University of Viborg's digital library. Viborg mappen is an online maps service created by the University Library based off of OpenStreetMap code. It uses a vector-based map-making system which is scalable to building heights - meaning there is no pixelation as you zoom in and out. This makes it ideal for making digital reproductions of historical building plans or studying areas inaccessible by Google Maps. Another unique feature is that users can add notes to the map which will then be available for public view. The initial development of Viborg mappen occured in November 2017. The project was designed and launched by Jacob Frisk and Jens Brødsgaard at the University Library of Viborg as a means to provide archival maps of the city and surrounding villages to the public. Its creation was originally funded by a grant from Horsens Municipality and it was hosted through an Amazon Web Services server. On March 2, 2018, the university made an official press release and put out a call for volunteers who could code using OpenStreetMap code. Within days, the project had already launched successfully with over 15 volunteers contributing to its development. The project's Github page was created on April 5, 2018 and by mid-April it was already available for users to see. It has since accumulated an active user base which varies between 50 to 80 people per month. Although not specifically backed by the University, several students have used Viborg mappen as a means to improve their IT skills. One of which who contributed code was Thomas Mølgaard Jespersen who founded the University's coding team in 2018. Viborg mappen is available for use via the website below. However, there are project instructions located on its website as well which shows how to properly use the Viborg mappen's tools in order to create maps that are accurate and easily readable. The searches for maps currently employ Google Maps in order to provide users with an image of surrounding areas when they arrive at the mapping site. It is believed that Viborg mappen will eventually expand past its Viborg base in order to cover all of Denmark when it is upgraded to scale 1:50,000 in 2020.
